American Values

As a country, we say we value the hard work women do. Women work harder than men and that shows, yet men get paid more and receive more benefits. Women earn more college degrees than men, meaning that more women are on the job market. If more women have college degrees, then shouldn’t they earn at least the same? In 2018, full time female workers earned only $0.79 for every $1.00 a man makes. That means that men’s salaries are 21% more than women. On top of that, men received more benefits if they had a child. Women bring children into the world yet aren’t rewarded for it. Instead, men are. If we really value women that much, then shouldn’t pay and opportunities be equal? Even though over the years, women’s pay has been rising and the wage gap has been shrinking, men have been given more rewards than women. This all shows that we don’t stick to what we say. The things we say we value aren’t what we actually believe. If we truly value women then they should be rewarded for all of the things that they do.

  1. Hello, Kalina! My name is Ms. Blair, and I have been observing your classroom for the past few weeks. I will also be student teaching in your class this winter. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your classmates throughout this school year.

You mention toward the end of your blog that women's pay has been rising over the last few years, although there is still a clear gap between men's earnings and women's earnings. Is this evidence of society shifting toward valuing women? What other values might these ideas connect to?
